CANUK to immortalise Soutwark Mayor, Tayo Situ

Tayo SituThe Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK) is to immortalise the name of Mayor Tayo Situ, of the London Borough of Southwark who passed away on Monday, 9th of May 2011.

This was stated by the chairman of the association, Chief Bimbo Roberts Folayan, during a condolence visit to the family of the late Mayor. According to him, the late mayor, apart from being a personal friend and colleague, was a rare UK based politician of Nigerian origin with a social conscience who identified with Nigerians and participated in various activities and ventures with other Nigerians with the aim of promoting democracy, good governance and the development of Nigeria at home and in the Diaspora.

He stated that the Mayor must be honoured as a giant Nigerian who even on his death initiated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Osun state government with the United Kingdom s Borough of Southwark where he was mayor. This MOU was signed by the Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola only a few days ago.

The Association is in touch with the Nigerian High Commission and the family of the late Mayor towards participating in and giving the Mayor a befitting burial. Mayor Tayo Situ, a most respected and dignified mayor, died after being ill for a number of weeks.

An accountant, Tayo was first elected a councillor in 2002, re-elected twice, and unanimously voted in as the Mayor of Southwark, by his fellow councillors in May 2010. Mayor Situ was a tower of strength in the Borough of Southwark and the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom. As an award-winning Nigerian, Mayor Tayo Situ is renowned for his incisive contributions that have positively impacted the lives of the residents of Southwark over the last nine years he has been a councillor; this is as well as his tireless efforts to better the lot of Nigerians, individually and as groups that he came into contact with.

May he rest in perfect peace.
