LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS AND CANUK
The countdown has literally begun on the London 2012 Olympics and CANUK's Project Team has been working with the Vice Chairman, Mr Chima Olugh to finalise the laudable NUKOC Project Plan; as well as other projects relating to the Games. The Games will be the biggest sports fiesta ever hosted in the UK and probably in our lifetime, leaving a legacy of sports and infrastructural development across the British Isles as the venues for the various events transverse the whole country, and not just London. Our constituency are Nigerian Associations in the UK, and through them, the estimated three million Nigerians and friends of Nigeria based here. In relation to the forthcoming London 2012 Olympics, the following must be CANUK's responsibilities: 1. To inform our constituency of various opportunities available to individuals, businesses and organisations 2. To inform our constituency of the various activities taking place from now up to the end of the Paralympic Games in September 3. To update our constituency with relevant information obtainable from the various organisations involved in the delivery of the Games 4. To play hosts to the Nigerian Olympic contingent 5. To be an effective interface between the Nigeria High Commission, the Nigeria Olympic Committee, the Olympic Organising Committees, the UK Nigerian Community and the Press 6. To create a bridge of understanding and collaboration between visitors from Nigeria and Nigerians in the UK 7. To create opportunity for tourism and business for our communities You are probably aware that relevant organisations involved in the delivery of the Games include: 1. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) 2. The London 2012 Organising Committee 3. The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) 4. The Nigeria High Commission 5. The five host councils (boroughs) - Newham, Greenwich, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Hackney 6. The Office of the Mayor of London The Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (CANUK), under the chairmanship of Mr Bimbo Roberts Folayan, is already having meetings with these relevant organisations and will soon establish an effective Committee that will help us deliver the above objectives efficiently. We are asking you to please recommend suitable individuals who can contribute their time and resources in ensuring that our community is positively impacted on, nation-wide, by the London 2012 Olympics. Our objective is to have this Committee in place by the 18th of February, with the deadline for the receipt of recommendations being the 10th of February. This will give us two weeks to liaise with those recommended and present them at the annual general meeting of CANUK, on the 25th of February at the Nigeria High Commission. CANUK will extensively deploy the use of our media channels - Website, Facebook, Twitter, Emails, Newsletter and will work extensively with our media partners in ensuring we bring to you as much relevant, timely and beneficial information as possible. We urge you to regularly checkout these channels for updates. Please send your recommendations to chairman@canuk.org.uk The Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK)
