UK PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE INCIDENT OF THE ALLEGED NIGERIAN TERRORIST on Thursday 14 Jan 2010
A joint press conference has been called to state the common position of the Nigerian Community in the UK on the recently reported terrorist incident that happened on 25th December 2009. The CANUK Statement below has been our stated position about the accused, Umar Farouk Abdul Muttallab.
We join our fellow Nigerians unequivocally and whole-heartedly in condemning the alleged actions of the said person, a Nigerian national, in the strongest possible terms.
CANUK along with the other Nigerian groups will help with all lawful requests for information and assistance, but - use the opportunity to ask that:
we are not tarred with an additional brush
there is no automatic assumption by UK (and world) authorities that Nigerians are an additional risk
Not used as an excuse for unwarranted profiling or exclusion for certain UK jobs where we already are know to do well
use the opportunity to help ABLE and similar groups in the effort to raise the Nigerian standards of security etc for all
engage with Nigerian Org in the UK where there are perceived issues
ensure that where Nigerians are harassed as a result of or in connection with the allegations of terrorism they are fully protected in law and the full weight of the law brought to bear on those who perpetuate such actions- verbal or physical.
xxxx Nigerian involved in alleged Terrorist action on USA Flight xxxx.
While condemning in the strongest possible terms the alleged actions of a Nigeria on a flight to the USA we must point out that facts are still emerging. There are reports that his family were so concerned about his religious views that they warned major embassies including that of the USA. Parents are also reported to have expressed surprise that he got US VISA despite being on their watch list.
CANUK states that this is not the sort of act that Nigerians in the UK get involved in and indeed there are many Nigerians who also consider themselves both British and Nigerian and are proud to have both lines of ancestry. Nigerians in the UK contribute positively to the UK and are as shocked as the rest of the world at the unfolding events.
And finally we have coressponded with some News outlets and reminded them of all the Nigerians making a positive difference, and explained that while some may not get the jobs they should in the UK none were disaffected to this level. The alleged act in explicable.
Through our member ABLE we have also met with The Metropolitan Police along with Nidoe and will be following up on concerns about the effect of this one action on the majority of law abiding Nigerians. If there are any incidents related to the alleged terrorist activity please let us know.

With both nations fielding their strongest teams, and Kingston born John Barnes, the Liverpool and England legend, at the helm of the Jamaican national team, it promises to be a great night out.
Jamaica coach John Barnes told us, "Nigeria is one of the World’s top teams so it will be a competitive match for us. We are now stronger than we have been for some time as a national team. We have quality players that we will blend together with the right balance, spirit and mentality but of course we also need the right tactics. I would say to all fans from across the country, come and enjoy the game and expect a good performance!” For the resurgent Reggae Boyz, (who have leaped to FIFA ranking 66 in just 14 months after wins against Mexico, Honduras and Canada) this will be the chance to build on their recent Caribbean Championships win in December. The Super Eagles are also soaring up the FIFA rankings, jumping from 45th to 17th in 12 months under the management of Shaibu Amodu. With the 2012 World Cup finals in their sights, the match in London is essential preparation for their opening Group B qualifier away to Mozambique in March. DO YOU KNOW HOW NEW UK TAX RULES MAY AFFECT YOU?
Avid Budget Watchers will have spotted that the tax rules are changing for UK residents who are not domiciled in the UK and who have non-UK income and/or gains. A non-domiciled person is broadly someone who has a foreign-born father and who does not intend to remain permanently in the UK. The key message is do not panic. But do understand that you may have to report to HMRC your income and gains from outside the UK where these exceed £2000 in the tax year or where you bring any foreign income or gains into the UK. To help you understand these rules and how they affect you CANUK is organising a series of events where HMRC will come and explain these rules. If you want to be part of the planning team for these events email non-dom@canuk.org.uk.
The CANUK Executive has asked Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN - UK Chapter) and the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM - London Chapter) to consider leading on making these workshops happen and to include all of you who are interested.
