New Horizons "Infotainment" concert for Nigerian youths hits Abuja

Thousands of young people attended a musical extravaganza in Abuja this weekend which was designed to highlight the benefits of information technology.

Information and communications firm New Horizons Systems Solutions launched Infotainment (X-Project) at the Veledrome Centre at the Abuja National Stadium on Friday February 20th, featuring top performances along with a range of IT-driven events.

Wazobia FM radio presenter Steve Onu, also known as YAW, headed the event's proceedings and also treated fans to a special performance.

An estimated 10,000 youngsters were in attendance, many hoping to scoop some 500 tuition scholarships that were promised to the first participants to register for the event.

There were also talks given on various technology-related topics such as 'The Seven IT Skills of Fortune'.

New Horizons said the event was aimed at developing the IT skills and awareness of young Nigerians as part of its Century Nigeria project.

It is hoped that through the event,  young people's skills can be harnessed for a highly-skilled workforce with the necessary means to improve Nigeria's technological infrastructure and help to cement its place in today's increasingly internet-reliant global community.

Tim Akano, chief executive and managing director of New Horizons, said: "Our goal, each year is to surprise ourselves and others by the creativity, distinctiveness and reach of those we identify and support - in this case, the Nigerian youths and the young at heart in general."

Last year's Infotainment event took place at the Bamora Hall in Lagos and featured rising Nigeria hip-hop star 9ice. New Horizons also hosted five ICT seminars in ten different locations around the country, attracting some 120,000 youngsters.

Nigerian youth receives Unicef seal of approval

An enterprising Nigerian youth has been recognised by the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) Voices of Youth for his work in trying to encourage more youngsters to contribute to national development.

Oyebisi Babatunde Oluseyi was awarded a certificate of recognition by the organisation in New York for establishing the Unicef Rural Voices of Youth in Nigeria back in 2005.

Oluseyi, a graduate of the Federal College of Forestry (Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria), was praised for his work in giving young people from remote areas that lack internet access a platform to air their thoughts and opinions on a range of issues that affect them.

As part of the scheme, Oluseyi and a team of volunteers travel to various rural areas in Nigeria every month to engage young people who would not otherwise the chance to contribute to the development process.

For their first mission, the team travelled to Yemetu Alaadorin in Ibadan, an area with no safe water supplies, where people are forced to use water from the nearby Rogan River for everyday uses including drinking, cooking, cleaning and washing.

The city is awaiting the completion of a borehole, which when finished will provide around 6,000 members of the community with fresh water.

Oluseyi and his team also visited Olorunda Abaa, a rural village in Oyo State, where they met with local children and got their thoughts on parent-children relationships.

Oyewole Semiat, 18, told the Unicef team: "I would expect that if adults want to talk to young people they should talk to us calmly and in a religious manner. Most times for example I am beaten when I make mistakes, which I don't think is right."

He added: "Parents and other adults should learn to talk to us rather than beating us so that we don’t run away from home."
