You are welcome to the home page of the
Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom and
Northern Ireland (CANUK).
As the umbrella body representing all Nigerians in the United Kingdom, CANUK's mission is to Protect, Unify, and Empower Nigerians in the United Kingdom towards contributing to the growth and development of our host country, (the United Kingdom) and our motherland (Nigeria). We also aim to replicate all of these with those Nigerians visiting Great Britain.
During your visit to our site, do enjoy the various sections containing constantly updated information about CANUK's far-reaching activities.
The Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK) was formed by the Nigerian communities and the Nigeria High Commission in the United Kingdom in recognition of a clear need to unite the plethora of Nigerian societies, bodies, unions and associations under one all-embracing umbrella organisation.
This ensures that whenever and wherever appropriate, the welfare, views, and community interests of Nigerians in the United Kingdom are represented in a harmonious and organised manner; thereby giving a common forum and united voice to an expression of pride and hope for a vibrant Nigerian community in the United Kingdom.
Here in the UK, the Nigeria High Commission has been blessed with inspiring High Commissioners, Ministers and staff. This is not surprising because of the strategic importance of the UK to Nigeria. The founding patron of CANUK was HE Dr Christopher Kolade CON, the former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK. He was succeeded by HE Dr. Dalhatu Sarki Tafida, OFR and the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Dozie Nwanna OON. These great Nigerians have discharged themselves credibly as statesmen per excellence.
CANUK currently represents about 80 different associations and 18 other affiliate/associate members with an initial take-off membership of 28,000. Its membership is growing at a very fast pace and we envisage it will soon embrace the estimated over 2 million plus Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom.
On the 29th of January, a new set of Executives was sworn in. One of the main plans of these new executives is to embark on a massive mobilization of Nigerians in the UK. In fact, complete and revolutionary restructuring is going on within the Nigerian community in the UK and loads of other new programmes are in the pipeline to make CANUK more relevant to the community. We will keep you informed on developments as time goes on. In the meantime, we invite your comments and ideas on how to improve on what CANUK should be to the community, the UK and Nigeria. Kindly contact us also for any other information or assistance not contained within this site regarding Nigerians in the United Kingdom.PRESS RELEASE
9th October 2011 - For immediate release
ALL IS NOW SET FOR THE ANNUAL NIGERIAN CARNIVAL UK 2011.........A Unique celebration of Culture, Sports and Arts as Nigerians Unite For The Future.
The largest customised celebration of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria, in the UK in recent memory takes place next week Saturday, the 15th of October, as Nigeria's First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan flies in to flag off the historical event at Leyton Marsh Fields in East London from 10.00am. The 2011 Nigerian Carnival is set to become part of an annual calendar of events for Nigerians worldwide. Thousands of Nigerians and their colleagues are expected to attend this mega occasion showcasing the very best of Nigeria.
The annual event is organised by Nigerians Carnival UK Ltd (NCUK), an event management corporation renowned for the execution of successful major events worldwide. NCUK's last event was attended by over thirty-five thousand revellers in Burgess Park at London's South East. Mr Kashif Jones-Laguda, the Founder and Chairman of NCUK said "We are simply overwhelmed by the incredible support we received everywhere. The Nigerian community, through CANUK, the Nigeria High Commission in London, the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria, our corporate sponsors particularly ARIK AIR,...all these go to confirm that Nigerians are indeed uniting for the future" This is the first time that CANUK will be merging their annual Family Fun day with Nigerian carnivals and this promises to be the first all Nigerians in the UK collaborative affair.
According to a BBC report, this years' event is set to be even more exciting, informative and educative. The rich diversity of Nigeria, said by many to be made up of various nations, will be reflected in enriching cultural troupes' performances. Complemented by various artistes doing their "thing", and with various sporting activities going on, it is a day every member of the Nigerian family will not forget soon - including kids who will simply outplay themselves in the dedicated Children Section. It will also feature various corporate and different exhibitions with all types of products.
Bimbo Robert Folayan is the Chairman of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (CANUK). At a recent briefing, he confirmed "CANUK's mission to protect, unite and empower Nigerians and Nigeria-related organisations in the UK. With an estimated three million Nigerians here in the British Isles, we have achieved a lot in unifying the community. CANUK actively support events by her member-associations and NCUK is one of our members. We have succeeded in ensuring that for first time the corporate world, the community, and the government of Nigeria (through the Nigeria High Commission and the office of the First Lady), come together as one in delivering this important event to our host country, Britain".
The event is a focused activity to educate and enlighten people about Nigerians and to showcase the culture and commercial vibrancy of the country in a bid to further launch her into international mainstream and defeat negative stereotypes.
Activities leading to the 2011 Nigerian Carnival started with a press conference at the Nigeria High Commission hosted by her Excellency, Mrs Salamatu Tafida. This was followed by a pre-carnival party featuring PASUMA, DJ AZEEZ and TEE A.
On Friday, the 14th of October, Andrew Rosindell MP, on behalf of NCUK at the House of Commons, will host the pre-carnival press conference sponsored by ARIK AIR, the largest corporate supporter of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom.
On Saturday, 15th of October, the Nigerian carnival, hosted by His Excellency, Dr Sarki Dalhatu Tafida OFR, will be flagged of by the First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan.
